Frankly most of you must have been to busy thinking up problems during the film to listen to what it actually is. Saying things like human nature will never change is like 100 years ago saying women will always be our slaves. You forget how small you and your perspective are in the grand scope of history, things change history only repeats itself when we continue to live in a hierarchy you have never seen anything else and you certainly have never seen the Venus project in action. just because a book says so. who wouldn't want a lifestyle that promotes peace and security?

to the second commenter, yea in the past we exchanged goods but if you understand the venus project, everyone has access to everything so there is no need to trade anything. and no we wouldn't be giving up our freedom, in fact we'd have way more freedom and free time to be creative instead of working a 9-5.

to the third commenter, you don't need competition to thrive. and this is coming from a man so don't assume we need competition, that's just the way we are raised. i make music because it's fun for me and i enjoy it, not because i need to be better than someone or to win something. with more free time, people will be able to do what they ENJOY, so type='text'>I think some here are missing the point of the Ven...

I think some here are missing the point of the Venus Project. It's easy to criticize based on today's thinking, but I believe this is exactly what the Venus Project states must not happen if this will success. Yesterday's thinking can no longer resolve today's problems. Some here still look at this project and see "us vs them". This isn't what the Venus Project is proclaiming at all...there are no teams, no uniforms, and no competition in this future vision of global society.

The notion of this project stems from the aftermath of a major global crisis. They use "economic meltdown" as a possibility (which I found interesting considering the book was written in 2002). If the entire planet was affected by a total economic meltdown, or if all humans faced a major catastrophe, the Venus Project is saying that the "survivors" would have to work together to continue thriving, or possibly face extinction.

If the entire planet is experiencing the same dilemma simultaneously, there is no "us vs them". There is no "island of prosperity called the Venus Project" where some survivors may seek refuge. What Jacque Fresco is saying is that there is a way that we can all survive a major catastrophe (of which we all seem to be experiencing the beginnings right now)and start over without banks, money or a need to screw over your neighbor to try and get more. Human crises has always pulled humans together...it seems to be the only time when humanity unites for a common cause.

There is already enough to go around for everyone, but greed, competition and this desire to accumulate more than your neighbor creates an atmosphere of scarcity. The Venus Project is only saying that we can have abundance and peach, plus live and thrive with more of the positive and less of the negative, and that this will probably happen globally; hence, we the plan is to share everything globally...so no immediate need to defend against the mongol hoards just yet :-).
<link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' As a Woman, I can dream about a society where everyone is free from the 8hr work day, where everyone has access to education, creative expression and all the resources they could stomach. But the fact of the matter is, my counterpart, Man, cannot live in this society happily. And I say this respectfully and truthfully. If you take away a Man's means for competition, you take away his drive for life. What would draw a woman to a man if there was no way for him to display his right? We see this in nature from peacocks, lions, elephants, etc.. People (especially Women) do not like to accept this fact but it still remains a fact.

This Venus project society would do nothing but create an asexual society until there would be no society at all. Seriously, if all needs were met, what would we strive for? How would individuals stand out? I don't believe this drive is a result of the monetary system, it is called natural selection. Jacque Fresco talks about this in Zeitgeist II - but I think he undervalues what we already know to be true of human nature. There is no life without competition. It is in our nature.

There are greedy people in this world who choose to hurt others for their own gain. These people should be taken out of the game by any means necessary. However, I believe we sometimes take things too far. If there is greed, the answer is not to create a greedless society. If there is inequality, the answer is not to make a completely equal society. We need to find balance.

Personally, I believe that if Women were to be more selective in the men they choose to be desirable, the corruption in today's society would diminish. The pursuit of greed by any means necessary, even at the expense of entire countries and cultures (i.e. the third world) is the direct result of power which in todays world seems to be the pinnacle of what makes a man desirable. Watch a Rap video to see what I mean. These 'few men at the very top of society' (i.e. the elite) aren't doing this so that they can one day sit in a room by themselves, waxing there HUM V's and eating lobster! They do it for power and desirability.

Anyway, something to think about. I don't think this problem is as black and white as the Venus Project will have you believe.

Peace for all,
MissOtis

What's the big deal about the Venus Project? We lived before without the exchange of cash. What we did was swap one thing for another. Furs for tools. Tools for food.

I can not find anywhere and I can understand why they avoid the subject but we will have to trade something. Guess what it will be. We will have to trade all of our liberty, time and labor in exchange for the necessities of life.

Soooo what change is this really? It's called rationing too.
